Before you go/ packing
Packing up/ The long road home
- Have a spare key to you car stashed away somewhere safe (not your pocket!) and always bring jumper cables
- Whether it is music, talking or snoring, festivals are loud at all hours of the day. Bring earplugs to get a good night’s sleep
- Bring extra trash bags, and clean up. Plastic bags also make great rain gear in a pinch
- Pack layers of clothing for a variety of weather conditions, and always bring raingear. You’re likely to be out having fun in the hot midday sun and cold late night- and there is always a chance of showers
- It may seem like anything goes in the free-thinking festival atmosphere, but there are laws and rules that you need to know before you go to stay out of trouble
- Know your rights!
- Do not bring anything to a festival that cannot be lost or damaged
- Purchase tickets from authorized dealers to avoid a scam
- Bring spending cash. Food carts, merchandise tents, and other venders prefer it and may not accept credit cards
- Festivals provide a chance to step outside of everyday life, leave your modesty at home and jump right into the festival experience
- Don’t forget your ID
At the festival
- Put a blinking light on your tent to find it easier at night or in the rain
- Take care of your body: drink water, wear sunscreen, and don’t forget to eat!
- Approach the festival with positively and an open mind- people are strange, things can get overwhelming, and not every performance is for you, but that should not stop you from having a great time
- Always ask before you taking a stranger’s picture
- Festivals have an amazing variety of entertainment, check out something you have never scene before, you may discover a new favorite
- Bring a headlamp out with you at night, they are great for navigating dark paths and tents, and provide much needed light while keeping hands free in portable toilets
- Do not keep valuables in your tent
- Like elsewhere, if someone makes you an offer that is “too good to be true,” be wary, it probably is
- To extend your day, take a day bag out with you while exploring a festival with the essentials- water, money, snacks, schedule, lighter, etc.
- Baby wipes can be used in absence of a shower if clean is your thing
Packing up/ The long road home
- Being tired on the road can be extremely dangerous, drive home in shifts, or spend the night somewhere if you’re making a long journey home
- People may not want to publicly share their festival life. Consider what pictures to share online and the best way to do so
- Bring music to listen to on the way home that you will not hear at the festival. You may need a break from electronica, or whatever the genre, after a 4-days of dancing to it all night and day
- Many festivals are “pack it in, pack it out” meaning that everything you bring has to leave with you as well. Leave room for a couple of trash bags when packing up
Have a great Summer, be safe and have fun!!!
